How do you approach having tools in your shop? There are several different schools of thought on the subject, and some people only want what they know they’ll use, whereas others love to collect and would rather have something, but not need it.
Either way, there’s a good chance that there are several tools in your shop. The ones you use on a regular basis can stay in an area that’s easily accessible, but the ones you only need from time to time? Why not build a toolbox to house some of these items? It’s an essential woodworking project that can be endlessly customized to suit your needs.
With plenty of different designs to take inspiration from, this is a project that can be as simple or as complex as you’d like to make it.
If you’re looking for something quick and easy to make for your next project, a blanket ladder is the perfect option. All it takes is some lumber in your favorite species of wood and a few ½” dowels to create something that looks great and provides your home with a practical touch.
Whether you choose walnut, mahogany, cherry, or something else, a blanket ladder is elegantly simple — and it’s easy to build! Like the toolbox, you can customize a blanket ladder to suit your needs. They’re so simple that you could even build several at a time and get a head start on building presents for this Christmas season!
When is the last time you sat down to play a game of checkers? It’s a game almost as old as time, but it’s one that never seems to get old. After all, it’s fun to use your brain to try to anticipate your opponent’s moves and try to play ahead without losing track of where you are.
If you’ve never built a checkerboard before, now is the time. Choose two contrasting woods, cut them into 2” x 20” strips, and glue them together. Once the glue is dried, flip your piece and cut it into strips again. Finally, glue the new strips up in a checkerboard pattern, clamp it up, and let it dry. Sand it, apply your finish of choice, and call it good, or you can build a box to hold your checkers in. Once again, a project that you can make as simple or complex as you like. Sounds like a win/win to us!
